Guwahati News Desk: The Guwahati Municipality Corporation (GMC) released an official notice where Debashish Sharma the GMC commissioner shared the amount of tax not paid to GMC by some of the leading private institutions in Guwahati.
According to Sharma, the service taxes of more than 200 educational institutions are pending which amounts to Rupees 7 crores to be paid to GMC. Through the official release on Monday the Guwahati Municipality Corporation has shared the list of all those top institutions in the Guwahati city that had evaded taxes for over ten years.
GMC has brought the matter into light by mentioning some of the top well-known private educational institutions of Guwahati in the list that has escaped from paying taxes to the GMC. Those institutions include Royal Global University, Don Bosco in Pan Bazar, Gurukul, Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Srimanta Sankardev, NPS School and Assam Jatiya Vidyalaya among others.
These institutions were provided with a time period of one month to clear their dues as the time given by Guwahati Municipal Corporation. The GMC also informed that strict action with adequate measures will be taken against those officials who gave permission to these institutions to get away without paying their pending dues.
As per the notice issued on Monday, the Dos Bosco School in the Panbazar area has an amount of Rupees 1 crore to pay as Good and Service tax (GST). Meanwhile, the GMC has sent notices to all these institutions to pay all the taxes within 1 month and in case of non-payment of dues within the given time, further actions will be taken which will be discussed later. Notably, an earlier notice was sent to these institutions by the GMC asking the reason why they have failed to pay taxes on time. GMC asked them to respond within one month about their cause in delay of taxes for such a long time.
All these leading private educational institutions in Guwahati not paying taxes have collected fees from students even during the time when physical classes were suspended in view of the global pandemic COVID-19. Many of these institutions also did not allow students to sit for their examination in case they are unable to pay the monthly fees and even restricted them to attending online classes.
