Ishita Bora: Ghorapak is an upcoming horror short-film that is based on an Assamese folklore legend ‘Ghorapak,’ which is one of the scariest ghosts of Assamese folklore.

Directed by Chinmoy Barma, the film is all about the ghost, which looks like half horse and half human.

As ‘Ghora’ means ‘horse’ and ‘Pak’ means ‘bending’ (the ghost bends/paks the neck of a cow and kills), Ghorapak is mostly seen in the river banks, ponds and swampy areas at night. Also, it is believed that people who go fishing at night, they come across this ghost. Sometimes, it changes to a fully human state and can also control humans and it loves to eat fish.

In conversation with Hello Guwahati, Barma said:
“As a child, my grandma would use this folklore to get me to finish my meal and put me to sleep. Years later, Ghorapak stopped scaring me but still fascinates me. So I decided to bring this story to the cinema screens as a short film.”

He added:
“I have noticed that children nowadays are being deprived of the folklores of Assamese culture. I saw an opportunity to tell them this story through my film and to the other generations to go into reminiscence. Finally, we decided to work on this short film.”

The teaser has been widely appreciated by the audiences and left everyone with goosebumps.
The team has planned to shoot the film in November and send it to film festivals for some months and then release it in mid-2021.

The director further stated:
“This is a genre that not many filmmakers have explored. We are promising a beautiful story depiction and a visual treat to the audience coming from the remote corners of Assam, India. The film will showcase the real and raw lifestyles of Assamese people bound with a strong folklore presence that has always been there but getting overshadowed. We are experimenting with OJAPALI that is a regional dance & music combination of Assam.”

Barma said that he likes to experiment with horror when it comes to create films; his personal taste in watching film is “thriller.”

Currently, crowdfunding campaign is going on for the film and while asking Barma about this, he said:
“For the creative freedom we are getting through the crowdfunding route. Our team believes that for an independent filmmaker, crowdfunding is always the best option. We already have been featured in many magazines and websites for our films and I have been making films since 2013. Everyone involved in the film are professionals in the industry. This has been our dream project for which we have been struggling for months now. Finally, as we are making the film for the audience and for our culture, this should prove that we are not running away with the money and will complete the film.”
